Meridian, MS—Kaiser De Leon, Marion Military Institute's No. 1 singles player and the No. 2-seeded player in the 47-player singles draw, played some of his finest tennis in his MMI career to best the field and capture the USTA/ITA Southern JUCO Regional Men's Singles Championship on Saturday morning at the Northeast Tennis Center.
In the stunning finale, De Leon played brilliantly and outplayed Meridian Community College's Shane Trebisky, the tournament's top-seeded player, in every facet of the game. De Leon thwarted Trebisky's powerful forehand at every turn and practically flew around the court to retrieve each and every well-struck ball. De Leon's deftly-placed and perfectly-timed drop shots were David's slingshot to Trebisky's Goliath-like forehand. In the end, it was De Leon who reigned supreme, 6-0, 6-2.
In previous play, De Leon breezed by the following players: Nick Robertson (Holmes CC), 6-0, 6-1; Javon Yarbrough (East Central CC), 6-0, 6-0; Brandon Lane, the No. 6-seeded player from Mississippi Gulf Coast CC, 6-1, 6-3; and Mississippi Gulf Coast's Sam Blackburn, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinal match.
De Leon will now represent Marion Military Institute in the 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, SC, on Thursday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, October 12.
