Kelly Wins First-Flight Singles Championship to Claim ACCC MVP Award
Albertville, AL—MMI's Julia Kelly finished her freshman year with a spotless 19-0 record. Kelly collected three wins in the exhibition season, 14 wins during the regular season, and two wins in the Alabama Community College Conference Women's Tennis Tournament this past weekend at Sand Mountain Park. With her two wins at the conference tournament, Kelly becomes MMI's seventh women's tennis player to win the ACCC MVP Award. She joins the following pantheon of former MMI players to win the coveted award: Rachel Rossi (a two-time winner), Carlee Conway, Stella Fedele, Paola Bou, and Ksenia Vasilyev
Kelly dispatched Wallace State Community College-Hanceville's Anna Knepper, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinal match on Friday afternoon. Knepper's trademark talent of retrieving ball after ball couldn't hold up under Kelly's fierce and relentless shot-making capabilities.
In the final round, Kelly Martin, Central Alabama Community College's talented player from Australia, gave MMI's Julia Kelly a tough tussle, but it was Julia Kelly who eventually prevailed in two hard-fought and extremely well-played sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Congratulations to Julia Kelly on a tremendous season and an excellent tournament.
