Softball Sweeps Home DH with Bevill State

Marion, AL. – The MMI softball team swept their doubleheader against Bevill State Community College at home Saturday afternoon to win the ACCC series, 3-1. They will face Bishop State CC this week in the final regular season series.

Game 1: MMI 11 BSCC 6

Bevill State scored a run in their first at-bat, but the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Carlie Blanton walked and Katie Hopson singled to left field. Destiny Brashears singled to score Blanton.

Marion added four more runs in the second inning when Abigail Phillips doubled to right centerfield to lead off. Alexandra Gray sacrificed Phillips to third and Kyren Damon singled down the third base line to plate Phillips. Nichole Dockery hit into a fielder's choice and scored on a single and outfield error off the bat of Blanton. Hopson tripled to score Blanton and Brashears doubled to score Hopson.

Another three runs crossed the plate for MMI in the third inning. Phillips singled through the right side of the infield and Gray doubled, scoring Phillips. Damon singled up the middle, moving Gray to third base. Dockery hit a sac fly, scoring Gray. Blanton and Hopson hit back-to-back singles, scoring a run.

The Bears scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-4 before Marion added three runs un the bottom of the sixth inning. Hopson doubled to lead off for the Tigers and Brashears reached on an error; Hopson moved to third. Shelby Black singled from the third base line, scoring Hopson. Haylie Lee laid down a sac bunt, moving the runners to second and third. Phillips singled to score a run. Gray hit a sac fly to score Marion's final run.

BSCC added two runs in the top of the seventh inning but the Tiger's reliever, Haylie Lee, got the final batter to popout to centerfield to secure the win.

Emily Rice earned the win from the circle, giving up five hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and a strikeout.

Game 2: MMI 11 BSCC 5

Bevill State came out swinging in the top of the first inning and scored four runs to take an early lead. Marion added a run in their at-bat with Nichole Dockery earning a walk and stealing second. Katie Hopson singled and a fielder's choice by Destiny Brashears scored Dockery.

The Bears added a run in the third inning and held a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. Alexandra Gray singled up the middle for MMI and Kyren Damon followed with a single to shallow centerfield. Dockery took a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to plate three runs and cut the lead to just one run.

MMI's bats came alive in the fifth inning. Abigail Phillips singled to lead off for Marion. Gray singled and Damon walked to load the bases. With a new pitcher in the circle for BSCC, Dockery singled and an outfield error allowed her to motor around the bases and score. Hopson doubled to left centerfield with one out in the inning and Shelby Black singled to score Hopson. Veronica Ward reached on an error and Black was able to cross the plate for the Tigers.

Emily Rice came back to the circle in the sixth inning after Sydney Elam came in to pitch to close out the fifth inning, keeping the Bears from scoring.

MMI added another run in the sixth inning when Dockery earned a one out walk. Hopson singled, scoring Dockery.

Emma Parmley started in the circle for Marion. Addison Mitchell threw three innings in relief with Elam and Rice closing the game out, securing the doubleheader sweep.
