Softball Wins First Two Games of Chatt Valley Series

Marion, AL. – The MMI softball team won the first two games of the four-game series against Chattahoochee Valley Community College at home Wednesday afternoon. They will travel to Phenix City, Alabama on Saturday for the final two games (weather permitting).

Game 1 MMI 5 CVCC 4

Marion scored a run in their first at-bat when Nichole Dockery led off with a triple to right field. A sac fly from Abigail Phillips scored Dockery.

The Tigers added another run in the second inning. Alexandra Gray walked and stole second. Kyren Damon hit a ball to the right side of the infield, moving Gray to third. Dockery singled to centerfield to score Gray.

Another two runs crossed the plate in the third inning for MMI.  Haylie Lee reached first base on a two-out error and single from Emma Parmley moved the runner. Gray singled, scoring Lee and Parmley.

CVCC scored a run in the top of the fourth inning and then tied it at four runs each in the fifth inning before freshman Emma Parmley took the circle in relief of Emily Rice. Marion took the lead back in their turn at the plate when Lee led off with a single. Parmley bunted her to second. With a new pitcher for Chatt Valley, Lee advanced to third base on a wild pitch and an infield error allowed Lee to cross the plate.

Parmley worked the sixth and seventh innings, keeping the Pirates from scoring.

Game 2 MMI 12 CVCC 2 (5 innings)

The Pirates scored a run in the first and second innings to take their first lead of the day, 2-0. The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the two-run lead, 4-2. Katie Hopson and Veronica Ward were each hit by a pitch and Abigail Phillips walked to load the bases. Alexandra Gray hit a fielder's choice back to the pitcher before an infield error off the bat of Kyren Damon cleared the bases. Nichole Dockery singled past the shortstop, scoring Damon.

The third inning saw eight runs cross the plate for Marion. Carlie Blanton singled and a bunt from Haylei Lee got Blanton to third; Lee was safe at first. Katie Hopson hit a sac fly to right field to score Blanton. Veronica Ward doubled. With two runners on base, Phillips doubled, scoring two. Alexandra Gray tripled to score Phillips. Shelby Black, pinch hitting for Damon, doubled to right centerfield, scoring Gray. Damon subbed back in for Black and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Dockery singled, scoring Damon. After stealing second and third, Dockery scored on a hit to the right side off the bat of Destiny Brashears. Blanton laid a bunt down third base line and Lee followed with a single through the five/six hole. Hopson singled to score Blanton.

Starting pitcher, Addison Mitchell, kept the Pirates scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.
