Softball Splits Opening Day DH at EMCC

Scooba, MS. – The Lady Tigers softball team split their opening day doubleheader at East Mississippi, battling rain throughout the day. Marion will be back in action at home Thursday, February 5, against the Mustangs of Northeast Alabama CC.

Game 1 MMI 15 EMCC 5

After EMCC scored in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead MMI added three runs in the top of the second inning to take their first lead of the day. The Lions added three in the bottom half of the inning to take lead back. Marion would add three runs in the third inning, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, three more in both the sixth and seventh innings to earn the win.

Sophomores Nichole Dockery and Alexandra Gray led MMI at the plate. Dockery finished 4-for-6 with a double and a homerun. She scored twice, stole a base, and recorded seven RBI. Gray went 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and three runs scored.

Abigail Phillips hit a homerun for one of her two hits with three RBI. Carlie Blanton added two hits as did Kyren Damon. Blanton walked, recorded an RBI while scoring two runs; Damon scored two runs.

Also getting hits for MMI were Katie Hopson (1-for-3, R, 2BB, SB) and Destiny Brashears (1-for-4, HR, 2RBI, BB).

Haylie Lee took the circle to start game one and after a short stint was relieved by Emily Rice who earned the win. In 5.2 innings, Rice gave up six hits, one run and one walk with eight strikeouts.

Game 2 MMI 5 EMCC 6 (5 innings)

In a rain-soaked game two, the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim the win and split the doubleheader.

Emma Parmley, Addison Mitchell, and Haylie Lee all saw action in the circle with Lee taking the loss. Nichole Dockery and Alexandra Gray each had two hits with Dockery recording three RBI.

Getting hits for Marion: Katie Hopson (1-for-2, RBI), Carlie Blanton (1-for-3), Veronica Ward (1-for-3), and Kyren Damon (1-for-2, R).
