Softball Drops First DH

Marion, AL. – The MMI Lady Tigers dropped their first doubleheader of the spring season Saturday afternoon to Itawamba CC.  They will travel to Dothan, Alabama Monday, February 14, for a doubleheader against Wallace Community College.  Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.

Game one: MMI 7 ICC 13

Itawamba CC scored two runs in the first and second innings before Marion plated three runs in the bottom half of the second inning.  Jessica Morales earned a one out walk and Erin Babineaux blasted a homerun to give the Lady Tigers their first two runs.  With two outs, Carly Taylor walked and was brought around the bases thanks to a double off the bat of Meredith Taylor.

Itawamba extended their lead by adding two more runs in the fourth inning and another run in the top of the seventh inning.  With MMI trailing 3-7 and down to their final out, Kaela Gimberg and Nataley Whitner both singled for Maris Stinchcomb who took an ICC pitch over the right field fence.  Jessica Cross followed with a solo homerun to tie the game at 7-7 and send game one into extra innings.

Unfortunately for Marion, Itawamba scored six runs and took game one. 

Kaela Gimberg, Erin Babineaux, and Meredith Taylor each had two hits for MMI with Nataley Whitner, Maris Stinchcomb, and Jessica Cross each finishing with one hit.  Freshman Harleigh Anderson took the loss in the circle after relieving starter Kinley BoltonAlexus Lambert also saw action for Marion

Game two: MMI 3 ICC 7

Kinley Bolton started in the circle for the Lady Tigers in game two and held the ICC bats in check until they were able to score a run in the third inning.  They added four more runs in the fifth inning before Head Coach Jeff Benson turned to freshman hurler Harleigh Anderson for the sixth inning. 

MMI scored their three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Kaela Gimberg and Nataley Whitner led off the at-bat with back-to-back walks.  Maris Stinchcomb once again hit a homerun over right field fence to cut into the visitor's lead.  Itawamba added two more runs in the seventh inning.  The Lady Tigers got two runners on base in their last plate appearance but were unable to score, dropping the doubleheader.

Whitner led Marion at the plate with two hits in three plate appearances.  Maris Stinchcomb, Jessica Cross, Carly Taylor, Jaycie Armstrong, and Meredith Taylor also had hits in the loss.  Bolton took the loss after working five innings in the circle.
