Tigers Defeat Patriots at Home
Marion, AL. – The MMI men's basketball team defeated the Patriots of Wallace Community College-Selma Thursday evening at home to improve to 13-9 overall, 8-7 in ACCC play. They will be back on the road Monday, February 13 when they face Coastal Alabama CC-South in an ACCC South re-match. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bay Minette campus.
With the first five minutes of the game underway, WCCS and MMI traded baskets with the visitors from Selma, Alabama taking a 7-9 lead. Anthony Bryant was fouled on a drive to the basket and earned the three-point play to give the Tigers a one point lead. Wallace hit a three-pointer but was answered by Quandre Burroughs who connected on back to back three-pointers to give MMI a 16-12 lead. Another layup by Bryant extended the lead to six points with just under six minutes to play before halftime.
With both teams taking turns scoring before intermission, Marion held a 37-28 lead at the break.
Within five minutes of the second half, MMI extended their lead to double digits, 45-34, on a drive to the basket by Eli Elston. The Patriots would hang close and after the Tigers' offense went on a scoring drought, WCC took the lead (47-49) with 10:59 on the clock. A quick timeout by head coach Timothy Rodgers settled the Tigers down and sophomore guard, Quandre Burroughs, found his stroke from behind the three-point arc. With back-to-back threes by Burroughs, MMI took the lead back but surrendered it back to the Patriots after a couple of turnovers.
With WCCS leading 53-54 Tyrone Wright hit a midrange jumper and Burroughs hit another three-pointer, one of seven in the second half. The Patriots tied the game at 58 points apiece, but Burroughs drained two more three-pointers to give MMI a 64-60 lead. Elston scored and Burroughs stole the ball and finished with a layup; MMI led 68-60.
After WCCS called a timeout at the 5:01 mark, Burroughs hit two more three-pointers and the lead quickly grew to fourteen, 74-60. The Tigers were able to maintain the double digit lead the remainder of the game and secure the ACCC South victory.
Quandre Burroughs led MMI with 33 points after shooting 10-for-19 from three-point range. Anthony Bryant added 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Isaiah Green grabbed six rebounds while scoring 12 points. Elijah Marsh came off the bench to add 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Eli Elston also scored in double digits, with 11 points while hauling in six rebounds. Also scoring for the Tigers was Marselis Jones (2), Tyrone Wright (2), and Myles McClain (2).
