Tigers Extend Win Streak at Home
Marion, AL. – The MMI men's basketball team hosted the Boll Weevils of Enterprise State Commnity College Tuesday evening for an ACCC North-South match-up with the Tigers taking the victory by a score of 85-72. With the win, Marion improves to 6-1 overall, 3-0 in ACCC play. The team will travel to Mobile, Alabama Thursday evening for another ACCC North-South game against Bishop State Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Enterprise State recorded the first points of the game with a pair of free throws. Freshman Devin Graham drained a three-pointer to give MMI an early lead; a lead they never relinquished. Holding a 25-21 lead at the 7:11 mark, Dimari Flynn connected on one of two free throws to give the Tigers a five-point advantage. Nyrek Wheeler added two more free throws with just over six minutes on the clock to extend the lead to 28-21 when freshman point guard, Myles McCalin, found sophomore Brandon Jackson for a three-pointer; the lead was now ten for the Tigers. Another layup by Devin Graham on Marion's next possession caused ESCC to call a timeout with 5:02 remaining in the half. MMI went on to take a 47-32 lead into intermission.
After Kenney Gaines, Jr. scored on MMI's first possession to start the second half the Boll Weevils went on a run, cutting into the Tiger's lead. With under 10 minutes to play in regulation ESCC had cut their deficit back to single digits, 65-56, before Wheeler scored to put the home squad's lead back to eleven. ESCC continued to fight hard and with under three minutes on the clock cut the lead back to nine (77-68). Wheeler again found the basket for an easy two-pointer and Derrick Hutchins, Jr collected an offensive rebound and found Graham for another two-point score. MMI held an 81-68 lead with under three minutes to play and went on to record their sixth straight win.
Nyrek Wheeler led Marion with his third double-double of the season; 24 points and 13 rebounds. Devin Graham scored 22 points with five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Myles McClain added 15 points while dishing out eight assists. Derrick Hutchins, Jr. grabbed 11 rebounds with six points. Brandon Jackson scored 11 points off the bench for Marion. Kenney Gaines, Jr. dished out five assists with four points for the Tigers.
