Chipola. FL. – The MMI men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season at the Milton Johnson Classic hosted by Chipola College (Chipola, FL.) this past weekend, finishing 1-1.

In game one of the classic, the Tigers faced the host team and took a lopsided loss (46-86) after falling behind by nine points at halftime.  Nyrek Wheeler led Marion with 16 points and five rebounds.  Devin Graham scored 11 points while grabbing four rebounds.  Rounding out the scoring for the Tigers were: Kenney Gaines, Jr. (7), Derrick Hutchins, Jr. (6), Myles McClain (3), Jordan Long (2), and Marselis Jones (1).

MMI evened their record to 1-1 after defeating Southwest Mississippi Community College 76-75 in game two Saturday afternoon.  Kenney Gaines, Jr. rebounded from a tough shooting night Friday to pace the Tigers with 19 points.  He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists.  Nyrek Wheeler recorded his first double-double of the season; 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Myles McClain and Jordan Long each finished with 11 points.  Devin Graham and Derrick Hutchins, Jr. contributed with eight points while Marselis Jones added three points.

MMI will host Talladega College in their first home game this Friday, November 12.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
