Tigers Defeat Calhoun CC Three Games to Claim Series
The MMI baseball team won their first ACCC North series against Calhoun Community College, splitting the home doubleheader Thursday afternoon and sweeping the Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Marion will face Central Alabama Community College in another four game series with Thursday, March 23, being a home doubleheader; game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
GAME 1: MMI 4 Calhoun 7
Jack Beck finished 2-for-4 to pace the Tiger batters in the game one loss. Also getting hits for MMI was Nicholas Purvis (1-for-1, 2B, 1R, 3BB), Sage Hayes (1-for-3, 2B, 3RBI, 1R, 1BB), John Tunnell (1-for-4, 1R, 1RBI), Skyler Smith (1-for-3), Braeden Brown (1-for-3, 2B, 1R), and Luca Maberry (1-for1).
Matthew Casey started on the mound for Marion and was relieved by sophomore Maxwell Grogan who took the loss.
Game 2: MMI 8 Calhoun 3
Jacob Marshall earned the win with Nicholas Copen recording the save to give the Tigers the doubleheader split Thursday afternoon. In 3.2 innings, Marshall gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts while Copen threw 3.1 innings with just one hit and two walks and a strikeout.
Jack Beck, Mason Green, Skyler Smith, and John Tunnell each had two hits in the win. Also collecting hits was Nicholas Purvis and Sage Hayes
Game 3: MMI 12 Calhoun 2
Mason Green led MMI at the plate with four hits in five plate appearances. He had two doubles and three RBI with one run scored. Jack Beck (2-for-4, BB, RBI), Nicholas Purvis (1-for-3, 2BB, R), Nicholas Copen (1-for-5), Luca Maberry (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 3R), John Tunnell (2-for-4, SB, 3R, RBI), Skyler Smith (2-for-2, 2BB, 2R, BB), Major Paracca (2-for-4, 2B, SB, 3RBI, 2R), and Jake Smithson (1-for-4) all recorded hits for the Tigers.
Landen Williams started for Marion and threw five innings to collect the win, giving up four hits, two runs, and a walk with four strikeouts. Braeden Brown saw two innings of action in relief, giving up three hits.
Game 4: MMI 11 Calhoun 6
Camden Matthews recorded the win from the mound and helped himself out with a homerun in four plate appearances to finish with a team high four RBI. Harrison Poplin, Austin Collins, Jayson Wood, and Luke Fondren all saw action on the mound with Fondren recording the save.
