Tigers Sweep WCCS at Home
Marion, AL. – The MMI baseball team swept Wallace Community College-Selma Friday afternoon in an ACCC North-South doubleheader.
Tuesday's games (February 14) have been declared a forfeit by Bishop State CC which puts the Tigers back in action Friday, February 17, for a home doubleheader against the Eagles of Coastal Alabama CC-North. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Scott G. Davis Field.
GAME 1: MMI 8 WCCS 3
MMI scored in their first at-bat to take an early 3-0 lead. Jack Beck reached on an infield hit and Luca Maberry followed with a single to centerfield. Nicholas Purvis singled, scoring Beck. Nicholas Copen followed Purvis with a single to centerfield. A sac fly scored Maberry and a fielder's choice hit by John Tunnell scored Marion's third run.
After the Patriots were kept off the scoreboard in the second inning, MMI added three more runs in their turn at the plate. Braeden Brown singled to left centerfield to start the inning. Beck singled and Maberry's bunt loaded the bases. With a new pitcher on the mound for WCCS, Purvis hit a sac fly to score a run; runners advanced a base. A base hit past the third baseman by Copen scored a run and a fielder's choice added the third run of the inning; Tigers up 6-0.
With Luke Fondren on the mound for MMI in relief of starter Jayson Wood for and holding Wallace CC scoreless again in the third inning, the Tigers catcher, Skyler Smith, blasted a homerun over the left field fence to add a run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Patriots scored their first run in the fourth inning off a solo homerun but MMI answered with another run in their at-bat. Purvis singled but was called out at second base on a fielder's choice by Copen. Luca Maberry and John Tunnell were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sac fly by Smith scored Copen.
WCCS added a run in the fifth and sixth innings but Jacob Marshall, MMI's relief pitcher, was able to finish off the Patriots in the seventh inning and secure game one victory.

Landen Williams earned the start on the mound for Marion and held the Patriots scoreless until the third inning when they plated one run. The Tigers scored twice in the first inning when Jack Beck led off with a single over the third baseman's head. Nicholas Purvis reached on an error, moving Beck to third. Copen scored Beck on a fielder's choice and Cole Morton walked to load the bases. A walk by Jake Smithson scored their second run.
MMI added two more runs in the second inning. Ryan Barger and Beck both reached on infield errors; Barger moved to third on Beck's hit. After Barger scored on a passed ball a single up the middle by Major Paracca scored Beck.
The fourth inning saw Matthew Casey take the mound and hold WCCS scoreless in his two innings. The Tigers added three innings in the fourth inning after Beck blasted a solo homerun over the left field fence. Paracca walked and moved to third base after an errant pick-off play by the Patriot's pitcher. A fielder's choice off Purvis' bat scored Paracca; Purvis was safe at first. With two outs Morton singled and Purvis moved to third; a double by Mason Green scored Purvis.
AJ Crocker relieved Casey in the sixth inning and held Wallace CC scoreless in his two innings of work.
