Tigers Split Home DH with Bisons
Marion, AL. – Although the MMI baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern Union State Community College Sunday afternoon, the Tigers dropped the series to the Bisons 1-3.
MMI will face Snead State Community College this week for another ACCC North series. The Tigers will travel to Boaz Thursday for a 12:00 p.m. start and host the Parsons Saturday with another 12:00 p.m. start.
Game 1: MMI 3 SUSCC 2
Sophomore Nicholas Copen took the mound in game one and held the Bisons scoreless until the second inning when they scored a run to take an early lead. Marion answered during their at-bat with two runs. Nicholas Purvis walked to lead off the Tiger's plate appearance. Jack Beck singled to right field. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball with John Tunnell at the plate. Tunnell singled to score Purvis. With two outs Colby Davis singled to left field to bring in Beck, giving MMI the 2-1 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless in the third inning and with Bisons stranding a runner in the fourth inning, Marion added another run in the bottom of the inning. Camden Matthews singled up the middle and John Tunnell sacrificed him to second base. Braeden Brown reached first on a bunt, moving Matthews to third. Colby Davis connected for a deep fly ball to centerfield, allowing Matthews to score what turned out to be the winning run.
Copen was relieved in the sixth inning by sophomore Jonah Leland after SUSCC plated a run to cut the Tiger's lead back to one run. Leland got the last Bison hitter to pop out in the sixth inning, stranding another runner. He got the first two batters to strike out in the visiting team's last at-bat and a popup to right field secured the win for the Tigers.
Game 2: MMI 2 SUSCC 7
Errors plagued the Tigers in game two and they fell behind 3-0 before their chance at the plate. Marion added a run in the first inning when Colby Davis led off being hit by a pitch. Mason Green walked. Trenten Justice's flyout allowed Davis to advance to third and Jack Beck singled to score him.
The Bisons scored four more runs in the second inning to give the visitors a 7-1 lead. The Tigers were able to score one more run in the third inning when Justice led off being hit by a pitch. Camden Matthews earned a two out walk and John Tunnell singled to score their final run.
