Tigers Even Series with Calhoun Saturday Afternoon at Home

Marion, AL. - The MMI baseball team swept Calhoun Community College Saturday afternoon to earn a 2-2 series split.

Game 1 MMI 10 Calhoun 0

Joshua Mehmen pitched a five inning one-hit shutout in game one Saturday afternoon to give the Tigers a much needed win in their opening ACCC North league series.

MMI saw all nine batters come to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs.  Nicholas Freeman started the rally with a one out walk.  Michael Rich followed with a walk.  Freeman and Rich both advanced one base on a wild pitch.  Another errant pitch brought in Freeman; Rich moved to third.  Hunter Stowe was hit by a pitch and took second on another wild pitch.  Nicholas Copen doubled, scoring Rich and Stowe.  Colton Lunceford singled to score Copen.

Marion added six runs in the third inning when Copen singled up the middle with one out.  Jordan Moore and Christian Wright each singled to load the bases.  Bryson Kirk was hit by a pitch with two outs to score Copen.  Freeman followed with a walk, scoring another run for the Tigers.  A base hit by Michael Rich scored two and after seeing a new pitcher on the mound, Stowe doubled to deep left centerfield to score MMI's ninth and tenth runs of the game.

Game 2 MMI 4 Calhoun 2

Calhoun took a 1-0 lead after a home run in the top of the second inning.  They added another solo home run in the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 advantage.  The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give starting pitcher, John Allen, the lead. Hunter Stowe doubled to right center field to lead off the inning.  He was thrown out at third base on a fielder's choice hit by Trayton TaftNicholas Copen reached first on another fielder's choice; Taft was out at second.  Colton Lunceford doubled, scoring Copen.  Nicholas Purvis homered in the Tiger's next at-bat, scoring two.

Mason Elmore relieved Allen in the sixth inning and recorded back-to-back-to-back strikeouts to close out that inning.  Lunceford homered in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead.  After giving up a one-out single iin Calhoun's last at-bat, he saw the defense turn a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

MMI will host Central Alabama Community College Thursday, March 11, in anther ACCC North four game series.  Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
