Tigers Sweep Bishop State at Home

Marion, AL. - The MMI baseball team recorded two wins Friday afternoon, sweeping Bishop State Community College, 10-2 and 9-8.

Game 1 MMI 10 Bishop State 2

The Tigers plated four runs in their first at-bat with back-to-back homeruns from Hunter Stowe and Nicholas Copen.  Bishop State added two runs in the second inning off starting pitcher John Allen to cut the lead to 4-2. Allen worked three innings, giving up two hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. 

The fourth inning saw Stowe lead off with a walk on four pitches.  Copen doubled to score Stowe. Nicholas Davis recorded a base hit down the left field line, giving the Tigers runners on first and third base.  Jordan Moore reached on an error, scoring Copen.  Christian Wright was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  A sac fly off the bat of Nicholas Freeman scored a run and Moore was able to move to third base.  He later scored on a pass ball, giving the Tigers an 8-2 lead.

The sixth inning saw Marion plate two more runs after Michael Rich led off with a double.  Stowe's fielder choice moved Rich to third.  Copen got a hit, scoring Rich.  With two outs Jordan Moore hit a triple and scored Copen. Tigers held a 10-2 lead after six innings for freshman reliever JC Watkins.  Watkins worked three innings, allowing no hits, no runs, two walks and two strikeouts.  Andrew Parks closed the game from the mound surrendering a hit and a walk.

Game 2 MMI 9 Bishop State 8

Marion scored a run in their first at-bat to take an early lead before Bishop State connected on two home runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead.  Nicholas Purvis added a run for Marion with a solo home run in the bottom of the second to cut Bishop State's lead to 5-2.  Bishop State started the fourth inning with another solo home run but Marion added three runs to make the score 5-6.  With two outs in the inning Trayton Taft doubled.  Mason Green got a hit and scored Taft.  Colton Lunceford followed with a hit and scored two runs for Marion.  

The sixth inning saw MMI take the lead when Taft singled to lead off the inning.  Green followed with a bunt and reached on an error.  Nicholas Freeman followed with a bunt single to load the bases.  Lunceford's single scored a run, tying the game at 6-6.  Stowe's sac fly score one run and moved runners to second and third.  Jordan Moore's two-out hit scored Green.  Freeman scored on a pass ball, giving Marion the 9-6 lead.  Bishop State scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning but Jackson Knox was able to close out the game and earn the save.  Freshman Jaxson Lucas earned the win from the mound.  In 1.2 innings of work, he gave up no hits and no runs.
