Tuscaloosa, AL—The Lady Tigers took a quick 2-0 lead over the Rust College Lady Bearcats via defaults at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles and then won four matches to score a 6-0 win in the morning match at the Stillman College Invitational Tennis Tournament. The Lady Tigers then returned to the Stillman College Tennis Complex for the afternoon match against the Tougaloo College Lady Bulldogs and pulled out a 4-3 win.
In the Rust College match, the Lady Tigers clinched the W with convincing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Carlee Conway and Maria Cespedes both won in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets. Shikiria Franklin scored the Tigers' third singles win of the morning with a 6-0, 3-6, 10-6 decision. Conway and Cespedes won handily (8-1) in the only doubles match played.
The Tougaloo College match proved to be of a different stripe for the Tigers. The Lady Tigers split six matches in the afternoon match, winning at No. 1 doubles and the top two singles slots and losing at No. 2 doubles, No. 3 singles, and No. 4 singles.
With the match tied at 3-3, the decision was made to combine one player from the No. 1 doubles team and one player from the No. 2 doubles team and pair them together to play a super tiebreaker for the match. MMI's Coach Wright selected Carlee Conway and Shikiria Franklin for his doubles team, while Tougaloo's Coach Shaw partnered Valencia Bond and Megan McEwan for his doubles team.
The first 12 points played in the super tiebreaker were split equally between the two teams, and then the Lady Tigers surged to victory by winning the last four points of the match. In one of the most pivotal exchanges in those last four points of the super tiebreaker, Franklin hit a blistering forehand down the line to set up Conway with a weak reply. Conway belted the sitter for a winner.
The MMI Lady Tigers play the Stillman College Lady Tigers in the championship match on Saturday, April 4. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
