Freshman William Reaves threw a complete game shutout Monday afternoon against Point University in game one of a non-conference doubleheader, allowing just two hits. The Tigers defeated Point 6-0 in game one. Marion got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. Weston Hopkins earned a walk and was moved to second by Logan Taylor. Caleb Squires hit a single, scoring Hopkins. Squires stole second and then scored on an error off the bat of Mickey Forrest.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Jordan Smith started the inning off with a basehit and was moved to second on a balk. Phillip Lenoir was hit by a pitch and Logan Nix laid down a perfect bunt for a hit to load the bases. Derrik Turner hit a bases clearing double to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead. A pass ball moved Turner to third and an error by the third baseman allowed Turner to score the final run of the game.
Marion won game two (2-0) with sophomore Ryan Burkett getting the start on the mound. He worked two scoreless innings before handing the ball over to sophomore Brett Lightsey. Lightsey allowed just two hits in four innings of work.
MMI scored once in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Ryne Benson hit a double to centerfield that moved Taylor Clemmons (HBP) to third base. William Lenoir followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Clemmons.
The two wins improve MMI to 15-10-1 on the season. The Tigers will travel to Wallace State Community College Thursday for an ACCC North doubleheader.
