Marion, AL—For the second Saturday in a row the Lady Tigers knocked off the Snead State Lady Parsons, 5-4. The previous encounter in Boaz, AL, was decided by a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. This time around the match came down to the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.
The Lady Tigers snagged two of the three doubles matches to begin the match. MMI's No. 1 doubles team of Shannon Brewer and Lydia Carter played sloppy tennis for the better part of the first set but still managed to win that first set, 6-4. Both players tightened up their games in the second set and won that set in convincing fashion, 6-0. Maria Cespedes and Ashley Johnston pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. The Snead team of Bertoldi and Owens won 6-1, 6-3 at the third doubles slot.
Snead won Singles Flights 4, 5, and 6 convincingly, winning each of those flights in straight sets. Sidney Garner double-breadsticked Ashley Johnston, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Amanda Bertoldi dumped Victoria Jones, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. And Courtney Moore double-bageled Shikiria Franklin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
With Snead State holding a 4-2 lead, MMI's Lydia Carter closed the scoring gap to 4-3 with a solid performance at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3. Shannon Brewer then evened the match at 4 apiece with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
That left the match in the capable hands of Maria Cespedes, MMI's No. 2 singles player. After cruising to a 6-2 first-set win, Cespedes let the second set slip away, 6-7 (1). At that point a disappointed Cespedes continued to crush her forehands into the corners while throwing in a few well-timed and well-played drop shots. Cespedes rolled through the third set, 6-2.
The Lady Tigers remain at home to take on the Lady Sun Chiefs of Faulkner State Community College. Match play begins at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
