Boaz, AL—The Lady Tigers found themselves down 0-2 before even stepping onto the Snead State tennis courts on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Tigers had to forfeit two matches (No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles) before they started the match because only five players could travel with the team on Saturday.
Thus, match play began with two doubles matches (No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles) and one singles match (No. 5 singles). MMI's Victoria Jones at No. 5 singles stepped off the court first, losing her first match of the season, 7-5, 6-2. Trailing 0-3, the Lady Tigers clawed their way back into contention by winning the two doubles matches. Shannon Brewer and Lydia Carter played some solid doubles to win at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-2.
The match of the day, however, belonged to MMI's No. 2 doubles team of Maria Cespedes and Ashley Johnston. After routing the Lady Parson team of Lucy Bradley and Sidney Garner 6-0 in the first set, Cespedes and Johnston fell behind 2-5 in the second set. They fought back to 4-5 before losing the set, 4-6. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Cespedes and Johnston staved off two match points at 7-9 to eventually prevail, 12-10.
At No. 4 singles, Snead's Sidney Garner pulled away from MMI's Ashley Johnston midway through the first set and cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Shannon Brewer, Maria Cespedes, and Lydia Carter saved the day for Marion when each player won in straight sets. Shannon Brewer played like a backboard and defeated Samantha Dooley at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Maria Cespedes defeated her Snead State counterpart, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, and Lydia Carter downed Lucy Bradley at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
The Lady Tigers return home on Sunday, Feb. 16 to take on the Lady Tigers of Stillman College in a 1:30 p.m. match.
