Marion, AL—The MMI Lady Tigers in their season opener downed the Judson College Lady Eagles, 7-0, in a Friday afternoon match at the Paul B. Anderson Tennis Complex.
Match play was reversed, with the singles matches going on first and the doubles matches going on last. Ashley Johnston, MMI's No. 2 player, claimed MMI's first point of the afternoon with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win. Victoria Jones at No. 3 singles soon followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Shikiria Franklin, playing in her first collegiate match, scored an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Makenzy Karnehm in the closest match of the day won the first set handily, 6-0, at No. 4 singles but had to dig herself out of a 1-4 hole to take the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (1). Maria Cespedes scooped up the last singles point of the afternoon with her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
In doubles play, the No. 1 doubles team of Maria Cespedes and Victoria Jones, propelled by some excellent net play, pulled through with an 8-4 win. Ashley Johnston and Makenzy Karnehm produced the last point of the day with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Tigers will play Wesleyan College in another home match on Friday, February 14. Match play is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
