Softball Finishes 2-2 at Pearl River CC This Weekend

The MMI softball team traveled to Pearl River Community College last weekend for four games, coming away with two wins and two losses.

Friday afternoon saw the Lady Tigers defeat Northwest Mississippi Community College (9-0) and East Mississippi Community College (16-7).  In the first game Yasmin Cottingham went 2-for-2 from the plate with a homerun.  She scored twice and recorded two RBI's.  Also getting hits for MMI were Kirsten Borden, Lexie Green, Amanda Ingram, Danielle Phillips, Megan Dockery, Kaci Cochran, and Abbigail Elrod.  Ingram earned her third win in the circle, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out four batters in five innings.

Marions' bats exploded in the second game Friday, scoring 16 runs against EMCC.  Kirsten Borden, Amanda Ingram, and Danielle Phillips each had three hits.  Borden had a double and scored twice.  Ingram scored three times and recorded an RBI while Phillips blasted another homerun.  She scored three runs with five RBI's. Megan Dockery and Bryndi-Alyn Ward both went 2-for-5 from the plate with two RBI's apiece. Lexie Green, Kaci Cochran, and Abbigail Elrod also had hits for MMI.  Ward earned her fourth win, giving up seven runs (four earned) in six innings of work.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers dropped a 6-4 decision to LSU-Eunice who is ranked #1 in the NJCAA Softball Division II preseason poll.  Ingram gave up five hits and six runs to take the loss.  Yasmin Cottingham went 3-for-3 from the plate with a double and a homerun.  She scored twice and recorded two RBI's.  Megan Dockery had two hits with one RBI.  Kirsten Borden, Danielle Phillips, and Bryndi-Alyn Ward also had hits for Marion.

In the final game, MMI lost a close contest to the host school Pearl River CC, 4-3. Kirsten Borden and Lexie Green each had two hits in four plate appearances while Megan Dockery, Kaci Cochran, and Bryndi-Alyn Ward also had hits.  Cochran scored twice and had an RBI triple.  Ward threw five innings, giving up three runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Ingram pitched in relief.  She surrendered four hits and one run in two innings of work.

Marion will travel to East Central Community College Monday, February 13, for a make-up doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
