Softball Takes Two from Gadsden State

MARION, AL – Kalynn Allen, who pitched a shutout in the first game, raced home with the winning run on a squeeze bunt by Rachel Gauspohl as the Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers walked off with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep over Gadsden State here Monday afternoon.

Allen pitched a five-hit shutout in the opener as MMI scored its only run on an Ashley Strength double in a 1-0 win, helping the Lady Tigers to their first conference twinbill sweep of the season.

Gauspohl and Allen shared hitting honors in the nightcap. Allen went 4-for-4 and singled to start the winning rally, scoring on Gauspohl's sacrifice squeeze bunt.  Earlier Gauspohl had singled in a run in the fifth after sparking a fourth inning rally with a leadoff double.

Allen worked out of a first inning jam in the opening game and did not allow more than one base runner in an inning the rest of the game, walking none, fanning five and scattering five hits.

MMI got its only run in the fourth as Emily Tarango and Allen singled before Strength doubled to plate the only marker of the contest.  Strength led MMI with two hits in the game.

After being blanked in the first game, Gadsden quickly struck for two runs in the first, only to have MMI charge back and gain the lead.  Allen doubled in Tarango, who had walked, for the Lady Tigers first run in the third.  MMI then took the lead in the fourth as Gauspohl started the rally with a double.  Taylor Miner was hit by a pitch and Annelise Borg singled to load the bases. Jessica Lingelback singled in Gauspohl and pinch runner Andie Lopez scored later in the inning.

The Lady Tigers added two more in the fifth.  Allen singled and Strength was hit by a pitch. Gauspohl singled in a run and Borg scored another with a sacrifice fly.

However, the lead was short lived as Gadsden struck for three in the sixth to tie the game.  After reliever Lauren Camacho stopped Gadsden in the seventh, the Lady Tigers rallied for their winning run.  Allen singled and Strength followed with a single, Allen reaching third on the play. Gauspohl then followed with her RBI bunt and the Lady Tigers had a double win.
