MONTGOMERY, AL –Even though the Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers dropped another pair of games at the Alabama College Conference crossover Saturday, head coach Kristi Basso did not come away complete dismayed.
MMI lost to Jefferson Davis 4-0 in the first game and fell to Southern Union 7-2 in the nightcap.
"We did not play very well against a team we had already beaten," Basso said of the loss to Jefferson Davis as the Lady Tigers suffered their first shutout of the season. "However, even though we lost the second game, I thought we played very well against a good team and a good pitcher. We can take a positive away from that game.
"Obviously, our hitting was not what it has been," Basso said of her team that had averaged almost six runs a game but only scored four all weekend.
The lack of hitting and poor defense paved the way for a loss in the opener. Lauren Camacho went the distance, scattering six hits, but four unearned runs were the difference. Ashley Soos, Ashley Strength and Kalynn Allen produced the only hits for the Lady Tigers whose only threat came in their final at bat when Strength and Allen singled with one out only to be stranded.
Southern Union tied the game in its first at bat and used an unearned run to go ahead in the second. Courtney Shields' three-run home run was the deciding blow in the fifth.
Strength had two triples and a single to lead the MMI hitting attack.
