Lady Tigers Fall to Bishop State in Home Opener

MARION, AL –Two late comebacks fell short as the Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Bishop State here Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Tigers lost the first game 9-4 with one big inning their detriment and fell in the nightcap 5-3, leaving the bases loaded in each of the last three innings.

The double loss spoiled the debut of head coach Kristi Basso who was disappointed but not dismayed with the opening performance.  "Actually, considering the lack of work due to the weather, we played defense fairly well and made few mental errors," Basso said. "However, we could not come up with the timely hits to pull out a win."

"Right now our goal is to improve with each outing, as a team and individually," Basso said.  "If we accomplish that, then we will be all right as we move into March and then conference play."

The Lady Tigers outhit the Lady Wildcats in each end of the doubleheader, but left the bases loaded four times in the twinbill. Ashley Soos led the offensive charge for the Lady Tigers on the day, getting five hits.  Rachel Gauspohl had four hits, Taylor Anderson three hits and three RBIs and Taylor Miner had a hit and two RBIs.  Ashley Strength had three hits in the nightcap.

Kalynn Allen suffered the first game loss, being the victim of an eight-run second inning from which the Lady Tigers never recovered.  Lauren Camacho started the nightcap and took the loss.

In the opener MMI struck first as Athena Sayrie opened with a single and eventually scored on Miner's line drive single. However, the roof caved in in the second inning as BSCC used four single and four walks to plate four runs before Jasmine Cherry doubled in three more for an 8-1 lead.  Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth MMI rallied as Soos doubled, Strength walked and Miner was hit by a pitch. Anderson, Gauspohl and Whitney Bennett followed with run scoring hits to cut the lead to 9-4, but winning hurler Britney Howle shut the door and left the bases loaded.

Leaving the bases loaded was again the story in the nightcap and MMI spotted BSCC a 5-1 lead. The Lady Tigers left three runners stranded in the fourth, but struck for single runs in the fifth, courtesy of Anderson's RBI double, and the sixth.  After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, MMI had a chance to tie it in the sixth. Emily Tarango singled to open the frame, Soos added a single and Strength scored Tarango with an single. After Miner was intentionally walked, reliever Jasmine Cherry got the final two outs to preserve the victory for Howle who won both games. Kayla Rabon had a home run for the Lady Wildcats in the nightcap.

MMI plays at Judson College Thursday (Feb. 6) and at Holmes Community College (Feb. 8) before returning home Feb. 11 to host East Central (Miss.) Community College.
