Gadsden, AL—The MMI Tigers found themselves in a 1-2 hole to the Gadsden State Community College Cardinals after doubles play on Saturday afternoon at the Gadsden Sports Complex but bounced back to take four of the six singles matches to secure the 5-4 win.
The lone doubles win for MMI occurred on court 1. Morgan Hale and Andrew Wright continued their stalwart play and came up big with an 8-3 win. Courts 2 and 3 faltered, however, with Kaiser De Leon and Javier de Claire losing 8-3 on court 2 and Patrick Ryder and Marty Birchmeier losing 8-4 on court 3.
The Tigers blasted out of the gates in singles action, producing three straight-set wins (De Leon at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0; Wright at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-3; and de Claire at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3). The Tigers' Birchmeier lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The two remaining singles matches went the three-set distance, with Hale cementing the match win for the Tigers at No. 2 singles. Hale won the first set, 6-2, lost the second set, 6-3, and, playing flawless tennis in the third set, took that set, 6-0. Ryder also went three sets but came up just shy, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8).
The Tigers head down Alabama State Route 5 to take on Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette, AL, on Tuesday, March 31 in a 1:00 p.m. match.
