MARION, AL (1/4/14) – Marion Military Institute opened the New Year with a bang Saturday defeating Jeff Davis Community College 73-63 in ACCC non-conference action.
Sophomore Greg Henry was one of three sophomore players that finished in double digits scoring. Henry led Marion with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Josh Murrell finished with 12 points and grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Monta Sanford scored 10 points for Marion while dishing out a team high five assists.
The Tigers held a 30-27 lead at halftime and the game remained close in the second half until Marion built the lead to double digits at the 14:16 mark. The War Hawks kept fighting and would cut the lead to single digits multiple times late in the game. Some key throws and time management helped secure the victory for the Tigers. MMI shot 19-of-23 (82.6%) from the free throw line for the game.
The Tigers will travel to Enterprise State Community College Tuesday before opening up North ACCC Conference play at Wallace State Community College-Hanceville on Monday, January 13.
