Tuscaloosa, AL - Sophomore Anthony Spivey's bat helped MMI claim a 4-3 victory at Shelton State Tuesday evening. Marion scored first, crossing the plate three times in the top of the third inning. Shelton answered with one run in the bottom of that inning and both teams remained scoreless until the Bucs scored again in the sixth inning, cutting the lead to 3-2. The Tigers scored once in the top of the ninth inning and were able to hold Shelton to just one run to secure the victory.
Spivey led Marion at the plate, going 2-for-4, with a double and a homerun. Also collecting hits for the Tigers were: Shaun Spring (1-for-4), Greg Gladden (1-for-4; double), Zach Davis (1-for-2), Alex Reyna (1-for-3; 2 runs, 1 RBI), and Zach Poticny (1-for-5; double, 2 RBI).
Joe Hudson started on the mound for MMI, going six innings and giving up eight hits, two earned runs while walking and striking out three batters. Gabe Nevala came in relief to pitch two innings, giving up two hits and one run while walking one batter and striking out two. Chris Pennell got the save, giving up no hits or runs and striking out one batter.
Marion will take a two-game winning streak into a home three-game conference series with Central Alabama Community College this weekend. The first game is scheduled for Thursday, March 13, at 1:00 p.m. A doubleheader will be played Saturday, March 15, at 12:00 p.m.
